A mom has shared the cheeky note a neighbor left on her car, warning her she'll be towed for parking in her assigned spot.
The parent shared a photo of the hand-written note to Reddit's Mildly Infuriating forum, under username u/binxbox.
The post, which has amassed nearly 20,000 upvotes since being posted earlier this month, was captioned: "Neighbor tried to scare us out of parking in our assigned spot."
The scrawled note, which can be seen here, says: "Can you stop parking in my spot. All uncovered spots are available. You will be towed next time."
In the comments, she shared more information, explaining they'd recently moved into a new apartment.
She said: "We recently moved to a new apartment complex, have out of state plates. Another person had been parking in the assigned covered spot we were given.
"We checked with the office and they said it was the spot for our apartment and the person had probably been parking there since it had been empty for a bit. They said we didn't have to worry about being towed.
"I figured it was a person who was the second car in their apartment. My suspicion seems to be confirmed as three weeks later this person hasn't parked in any other covered spot."
The internet was outraged at the cheek of the note, as numerous people advised her to get their car towed instead.
Bmtime03 replied: "Have their car towed for parking in your space seems like an appropriate response at this time."
Future_Dog_3156 pointed out: "That other person should check with the landlord or property manager before leaving a threatening note. They assumed they could use it. Do they pay for it? They should clear it up w the landlord before confronting another resident."
Bountifuljoi suggested: "You could take their note and put it on their car."
Garchomp98 wrote: "Let them park on your spot and tow them."
Lonnysluv1 asked: "Did you bring the note to the office so they could straighten this person out of their delusion?"
Snuggledtoopieces commented: "No you just stop parking in the spot and wait for them to use your assigned parking until they get comfortable then have the car towed. On like a Friday. Preferably a holiday weekend."
While DannyDucks replied: "You should put the liability on the apartment complex to take action. You pay rent and parking to them to take care of these types of issues. You should let the apartment complex correct this versus you get into a parking war with a random person."
Newsweek reached out to u/binxbox for comment.
The chart below, provided by Statista, shows parking charges in some states.
The United States Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) looked into the inconsistencies related to towing across the country.
"Under the best circumstances, getting towed is an ordeal, even when justified," they said.
They looked at each state's laws, and highlighted two key issues. The report said: "Firstly, an alarmingly high number of states have no protections spelled out on issues such as whether a consumer is entitled to an itemized bill, or a reimbursement if their car is damaged...
"Only about half of states set any kind of maximum fees for towing or storage of vehicles towed without the driver's consent. More than 30 states don't require rates that do exist to be displayed or disclosed."
If you think your car has been towed illegally, they shared three tips for drivers, advising them to firstly contact the local police department's non-emergency number, who may be able to track down the car easily if the towing company has notified them.
Review all charges on your bill carefully, and dispute any damages. "In many states, you could receive a full reimbursement or even additional compensation for an illegal or careless tow," they said.
