But a new survey has found the comic approach to impressing the opposite sex is favoured by Australian men, with two out of three guys admitting to using chat up lines to impress women.
And the line guaranteed to have the most success is simple: ‘I forgot my phone number, can I have yours?’

Research by EXTRA gum revealed the top five chat up lines that, while cheesy, had the best chance at wooing the opposite sex.
But while chat up lines are favoured by men, only five per cent of women are actually impressed by the approach.
And the chat up line least likely to work is enough to make you cringe: ‘Are you on LinkedIn? Because I think we have a connection'.
Relying on a chat up line alone not enough, with the secret to wooing the opposite sex a combination of compliments and confidence.
Wrigley Marketing Director Tami Cunningham said keeping things simple and being yourself were the keys to impressing a date, with more than half of Aussie daters preferring a lively conversation or simple complement over an elaborate gesture.

For just under half of Australian daters, a simple compliment was the real key to success when impressing the opposite sex, with a 49 per cent success rate.
A genuine connection and lively banter were also important, favoured by 58 per cent of Australians.
Personal appearance can also earn brownie points, with four out of 10 women citing well-groomed and fresh-breathed men as impressive.

Importantly, daters were urged to stay true to themselves, and steer clear of ‘false advertising’.
Almost one third of Australian daters having met up with someone who looked completely different from their dating profile picture.
Other dating 'don'ts' were getting blind drunk, being rude, ordering the most expensive item on the menu, eating garlic or foods causing bad breath before a date or cracking out your daggy dance moves.
