Solange Knowles, the younger sister of Beyonce Knowles, was raised in her native Houston by parents Matthew and Tina Knowles and began her music career at the age of 16, performing alongside her older sister. Releasing her first album, Solo Star, in 2003, Solange followed it up five years later with the successful Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, which hit No. 9 on Billboard‘s 200 chart. Marrying Daniel Smith in 2004, Solange gave birth to the couple’s son, Daniel, when she was 18. By 2007, Solange confirmed the couple’s divorce. She wrote a song for her baby boy, “6 O’Clock Blues,” which appeared on Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams.
Known for her eclectic fashion sense, Solange inked a deal with Next Model Management in 2012 and launched a juniors line, Dereon, a sister line to House of Dereon, a women’s clothing collection launched by Beyonce and their mom Tina. Solange has also appeared as a spokeswoman for brands including Carol’s Daughter and Rimmel.
Solange helms her own record label, Saint Records.
