Mexicans remember comedian immortalised by cartoon character, Cantinflas, on 100th anniversary of his birth.
Mexicans are celebrating the 100th anniversary of iconic comedian actor Mario Moreno.
Moreno’s career began in the street theatres of Mexico’s slums in the 1930s and eventually blossomed into 52 major films.
His popularity grew so much, that a Mexican company created a cartoon character Cantinflas, played by Moreno, in the 1970s.
A film critic told Al Jazeera that Cantinflas has found a permanent place in Mexican popular culture.
Testimony to this is the fact that one hundred years after his birth, people still easily recognise him and are well aware of the legacy of this master comedian.
Al Jazeera’s Franc Contreras reports from Mexico City.
