Split: Gael Garcia Bernal confirmed he had split from Dolores Fonzi, but insisted they never married
He told the magazine: 'We actually didn’t even get married. We had kids...'
He then goes on to described having children as a bigger commitment than tying the knot, adding: 'Well, I mean, you’re more than married, right? In a way, having kids?'
Reflecting on his nearly seven year romance with the Argentine actress, Gael explained: 'What’s important is the arrangement. The responsibility. The deal. To do it with the person you’re embarking on [it with]. That’s more important than anything any religion or government would say.
'But that’s a case-by-case situation. I’m not saying it should be like this. But for us it was. The institution of family is important, definitely. And I enjoy it a lot. More than I thought I would.'
Movie star: Gael as 'Che' Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries
News of the couple's split was first reported by People En Espanol when it was revealed by his mother Patricia.
The pair, who started dating in December 2007 after his split from Natalie Portman, have two children together a son Lázaro, five, and daughter Libertad, four.
The couple were long-time friends, having co-starred in Spanish-language drama Private Lives (Vidas Privadas) back in 2001.
When he first became a father, Bernal spoke about how his life had changed since become a father to son Lázaro, who was born in January 2009.
He said: 'I think everyone who becomes a father or becomes a mother goes through this change of priorities.
'It’s a difficult thing to explain because it’s such a complex thing, and yet it’s so simple. So the best way I can explain it is, finally there’s someone more important than me that I have to consider.'
Bernal leaped to fame in Alfonso Cuaron's sexy road trip movie Y Tu Mamá También in 2001.
In 2004, he played Argentine revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries, which won a Bafta for Best Film Not In The English Language.
