Ashton Kutcher has revealed he had to 'mow down' his chest hair and start doing sit-ups for a throwback sequence in his new film.

Starring alongside Reese Witherspoon in new Netflix rom-com Your Place Or Mine, the actor, 45, at one point had to try and revert back to his 20-year-old self.

Playing the role of Peter, his character finds himself feeling romantically towards best friend Debbie (Reese) after they sleep together while swapping lifestyles in New York and LA respectively.

As the characters looked back on their younger selves to reminisce on how their relationship has developed to the present day, Ashton says he had to take on a mini-transformation to try and make himself look 25 years younger.

Making an appearance on Lorraine on Friday morning, the Hollywood star laughed as he explained having to 'mow down' his chest hair and get in shape as much as possible.

He explained: 'Here's the crazy thing, before we shot the sequence of when I was 20, I didn't have this much chest hair when I was 20!

'I actually need to mow this thing down and clean it up - and I'm like dude.. sit ups! God, I used to have abs when I was 20! Like, what happened!'

Ashton was 20 years old in 1998, at which time he launched his career as a model after taking part in a competition with International Modeling & Talent Association.

He signed with Next modeling agency in New York and went on to feature in campaigns for Calvin Klein and Abercrombie and Fitch.

That same year, he was cast in That '70s Show and moved over to Los Angeles to play Michael Kelso until 2006.

They went on to date 14 years later in 2012, then tied the knot in 2015, and now share a son.

He mentioned his wife during the interview on Lorraine, after his co-star Reese described their new film as a 'snuggle-up and watch movie', adding it feels like a 'breath of fresh air' that is was 'not about darkness'.

Ashton added: 'Mila and I searched for this kind of movie during the pandemic.'

It comes after the mixed reviews came in for the romantic comedy, with fans criticising Reese and Ashton's  lack of chemistry on the red carpet.

Kutcher's own wife Mila Kunis even agreed - and it seems that same lack of chemistry is present in the film itself.

While the film doesn't have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet - with the first review embargo just lifting on Thursday afternoon - many of the early reviews took issue with Witherspoon and Kutcher's chemistry, or lack thereof.

20 years of friendship: After her character, Debbie, swaps lives with her pal, Peter (Kutcher), the actress, who portrays a single mom, makes the most of her week off in New York City as she embarks on a steamy romance with a handsome man, named Theo (Williams)

The New York Times critic Amy Nicholson began her review by stating that all of the main players involved - Witherspoon, Kutcher and writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna (writer of The Devil Wears Prada, making her directing debut) - all have made successful rom-coms in their career.

'So it’s all the more confounding that their latest, Your Place or Mine, is as phony and flat as a store-bought valentine forced on every kid in class,' Nicholson adds.

She also bashed the store by Brosh McKenna, adding, 'People puttering in and out of the room folding laundry can rest easy that there are few crucial plot points to miss — and the ones that exist tend to get repeated at least twice.'

Nicholson - like many critics - did praise supporting actress Zoe Chao, who plays Peter's ex, described as, 'a marvelously droll narcissist somehow willing to drop her whole big-city life to help a stranger get her groove back,' adding, 'she may not win the guy, but she steals all of her scenes.'

However, The Hollywood Reporter's Lovia Gyarkye is so bold to suggest that Your Place Or Mine will help, 'revive the rom-com' genre as a whole.

Gyarkye calls the film a 'breezy charmer' adding it doesn't try to, 'surprise or be more clever than the viewer,' simply adding, 't aims to please, and in doing so helps re-energize the romantic comedy.'

The critic adds that after 15 minutes the audience knows, 'where the story is heading, but it's enjoyable because, 'McKenna constructs a tight narrative around the couple,' adding it's, 'less “will they or won’t they?” and more “why didn’t they?”'

Deadline critic Pete Hammond admits, 'there's nothing particularly new or groundbreaking' in the story,' but it's that same, 'comfortable familiarity' that makes it a 'perfect Valentine's Day offering.'

While others bashed their chemistry, Hammond said it works, despite not being together on screen throughout the majority of the film.
